Sitting in the Rail cart you hear the paper boy (of the Sharn Inquisitive Newspaper) yell:
“Cardinal Krozen issues Exterminatus! Read all about it!”
The rail is about to start rolling, but maybe you got time to grab a paper through a window or…
You remember it was such a paper that got you where you are now. You and your current associates were “military prisoners” once, about a year ago. Some were captured from another nation, some had disobeyed a cruel order, some had given one perhaps. Everyone had a story to tell. But now the war was nearly over, Cyre was destroyed in the Day of Mourning and rumor was there was a convention for peace negotiations held somewhere. So Brelish authorities invented a work-release program for “minor” prisoners. Mercenary guilds and companies could hire them on provision that they honored their probation terms. You remember reading a paper with a bunch of guild ads for that purpose with other inmates next to you. The line “Phoenix Lance Recruiting Company” jumped out at you for some reason. So you and a bunch of your jail-mates decided to apply there. They were House Deneith certified, but not affiliated so even better, you thought.
You’d heard stories about this Lance before, but meeting them in person was quite the experience. The original Lance (the A-team), was made of 4 people. Leader is Bekar, a Goliath from Byeshk Mountains (who likes to sing). Rides a huge mountain goat (mount) he calls Harem. Both wear some sort of rhino hide magic armor/barding. Charger specialists (barbarian look). He wields a magic Goliath Lance-type weapon which is wreathed in flames and sometimes, after hard charges, it breaks and douses the poor target in burning alchemist fire or something. It then magically reforms. Quite the trick and he’s famous for it (also the origin of the company name?).
Other members (all from Eldeen Reaches) are a female Orc Druid (Gatekeeper possibly you later found?) known as Greytongue, a Gnome Illusionist lecherous man called Vrix (Vrelingatoryx) and a cautious human roguish type who shall remain nameless(?). Usually called the Smith (thieves cant? find meaning), or Alan (handsome rock?). As you muse to yourself about the hidden meanings you’re also reminded this was a crowd loved Lance that formed this Company Guild.
Famous story is the Leader once saved a Brelish army unit, which was attacked in Droam by a bunch of Trolls. Bekar and his team arrived by chance at the battle, he charged the mama Troll leader in the back and crit her dousing her with flames and his mount rammed her down. She burned dead, demoralizing the other trolls who tried to flee, but mostly died (possible antagonist survived?). The rest of the team helped defeating them too.
At first they hired several people from Eldeen Reaches (some Shifters too) for a B-team. In the recent year they took advantage of the Breland prison policy. C-team is formed with people like you and your associates here.
But now. Company is in deep dept, A-Team is missing, several other failed missions of late (and not enough work to go around anyway, they dook ur jobs! j/k). House Cannith hired them often (cause of dislike with actual Deneith mercs), mission in Xen’Drik with A-team a failure (had to pay security costs too). Leader missing with rest of A-team. B-team forced to sign magi-contract for secret Cannith program. B-team MIA…
In resume, the world is Æberron and the date is the 13/06/995. (Day of Mourning was 20/02/994, in normal calendar the official peace Treaty would be 11/11/996).
In this world the Warforged are all high level (3+ at least) and require dragon shards as sustenance. Think Special Forces.
The world feels strange, like a mix between a pun and a curse. People are almost aware of being in a sort of (combat?) simulation, but do not verbalize (or internalize) criticism of it (things just are as they are):
Breland is late Roman, Cyre Greco, Thrane Spanish Inquisition. Karrnath is Slavic/Russian, Aundair is Gaulic/Frankish.
The campaign will probably move a lot near and into Cyre, but also in other places and nations. The theme will be both combat and diplomatic and RP oriented. Some downtime between “adventures” and perhaps solo stuff will be handled online (skype / https://www.roll20.net/ )
1) Players must submit their character’s story/reason for being in military prison. Including short term goal and long term goal is a bonus. Best submission as decided by players and me will get upgraded to C-Leader/Team-B-survivor and special added “bonus” situational circumstances knowledge.
2) Don’t obsess about choices, there will be free retraining early on and later on for a “price”, so just try stuff for fun.
And you can always switch to another character (C-team has more members than you).
